| | May 13th dive trip to the wreck of the Yukon

On May 13th, Chris and Matt Bell and I drove down to San Diego to dive the
beautifull wreck of the Yukon.
The Yukon, durring it's life was a Canadian destroyer, 350 feet long, with
full huge gun turrets, the works. About a year ago it was sunk in about
100 feet of water to become a dive park and a new artificial reef. It's a
great dive, if a little cold.
We took the dive boat the "Luis Ann" out, which is great little boat, with
knowledgable staff. It's only a 15 minute ride out, which is great.
On the boat we met Greg Olson, a friend of Chris' from the dive shop where they
both work. Greg and Chris buddied up to actually penetrate the wreck and seek
out the engine room, while Matt and I decided to tour the aft end of the
ship.
Below are the pictures Matt took, which I scanned in and tried to doctor up
as much as possible.
Here are all the pictures

| Here's me checking out the inside of one of the propeller cowls. | |
| This is probably the best shot of me and the propeller. It's not actually a propeller, just kind of a big disk
used as a placeholder for a propeller. I guess they didn't want to sink a nice workable propeller, even though
that would have been cool. On the high-resolution scan of this image, you can read my depth off my computer,
I'm at 84 feet. | |
| This is a terrible picture of me swimming up to check out one of the rudders. You can see it in the background.
Eaqsily 10 feet accross. Two of them.
| A hatch opening from the top deck of the ship. That's the railing in the distance with the kelp
growing on it. | |
| Another smaller hatch. | |
| Fish | |
| A rare action shot of me. Yes, I'm breathing. Notice how my nice drysuit is all puffy filled up with insulating
air. Comfy warm. | |
| Some odd alge | |
| A blow-up of a picture of a little Jelly Fish. It was probably three inches across. We run into a lot of
jelly critters, but most are smaller and less colorful.
| Sky shot | |
| Railing | |
| Greg, though who could tell if he didn't label everything!? | |
| Greg in front of one of the Yukon's deck guns. | |
| At one time this was fierce. I'm sure the Canadians blasted some pretty big holes in stuff. Paper targets,
that kind of thing. :-) | |
| Rockfish sitting under the hull | |
| | |
| That's probably me... Goin up! | |
